A Legion built by its people.
Chartered in 1952, the Byron-Springbank Legion has grown into one of the largest and most active branches in the area, over 600 members and 50 volunteers strong.
From one war's veterans to the largest community service organization in Canada.
The Royal Canadian Legion was started in response to the needs of the veterans who returned from the First World War. Today the Legion has more than 333,000 members and is the largest community service organization in the country, a non profit with more than 1,600 branches in Canada, 21 in the United States and 3 in Germany.
A century of service.
In response to the needs of veterans returning from the First World War, different groups met to help the disabled, sick, aged and needy.
The Canadian Legion was officially formed, becoming an advocate for improved pension legislation, returned soldiers insurance and help for those suffering from tuberculosis.
The passage of the War Veterans Allowance permitted financial assistance to thousands of men who were not eligible for disability pensions.
During the Second World War, the Legion provided canteens, entertainment and reading material for veterans at home and abroad.
The Byron-Springbank Legion received its charter. It has grown year by year ever since, on the commitment of its members and volunteers.
